Abstract:

The arts are often regarded as performing and exhibition vehicles. Can they become catalysts for transformative change and social impact? How can teacher training merge with artist development bolstering stronger ties to benefit students? How can universities play a key role? Through Evolving Creative Mindsets: Thinking through the Arts (HKU Press) presents some ground-breaking ideas and evidence for on-the-ground implementation in a local context from AFTEC, an award-winning arts education NGO.

About the Speaker:

Ms Lynn Yau (Chief Executive Officer, AFTEC) In the past two decades, Lynn’s keen interest in the inter-connection and correlation between the arts and education has driven her to build an AFTEC “action research” portfolio on the merging and interaction of the two fields, testing findings and strategies in diverse settings. She is focused on tapping into the innate powers of the arts to open windows for creative teaching and learning opportunities in disciplines other than the arts, from language to social work and the medical humanities. Lynn is a Hong Kong Scholar to the Clore Leadership Programme 2010 – 11, and was commended by the Chief Executive in 2022 for her outstanding contribution to arts education. She is keen on research and presented papers in Hong Kong, Penang, Brisbane and London. She is the co-author, alongside Professor Robin Pascoe, for a chapter in The Palgrave Handbook of Global Arts Education in 2017. She is passionate about training the trainers and working with young people.
